Written by Mohammed Ayo Busari, Images by Various - July 26th, 2022
As part of their Screen Arts major, students at Curtin University are hosting gigs to raise funds for their 2022 Major Film Production. These upcoming films began their pre-production earlier during the first semester of 2022 with the shooting of their pilot scenes. At the moment, these students are seeking help to raise funds for their projects to complete the rest of their production and post-production. One can support them by buying tickets to their events and enjoying incredible live performances, sets from DJs and winning gifts from raffle draws or donating to their GoFundMe pages. This is a good chance to help young people realise their dreams, earn great grades and have outstanding showreels and portfolios for their future careers.

“We’re a group of uni students working on our final film for our degrees,” says the filmmakers. “We are very excited to embark on the journey of bringing this story to life. We need your help to kick start this adventure of making this film, and your donation would bring us one step closer to our goal.”

With a plane to catch and very little time to spare, a hung-over Tom and his friend Dewey navigate the fallout of the previous night’s partying while looking for the keys to Tom’s car. With Tom’s car being the only way out, quips, jabs and insults are the language of choice for the pair as they both seem determined to piss each other off. Will this dazed and confused pair successfully find the keys to their new life?
“We’re a group of six passionate, Western Australian, filmmakers from Curtin University majoring in Screen Arts. We have been blessed with a hilarious script by the wonderful writer, Joe Gerus, which our crew is itching to get their hands into,” says the team behind the film.
“We are also incredibly fortunate to have three accomplished actors on board with our project, directed by the talented Sarah Simmons.”
When Doves Fly – August 11th at Bar Orient
When Doves Fly Fundraising event will be hosted at the Chesterfield Lounge at Bar Orient, it is a night of live music, dancing, games and lots of raffles, not only to raise money that will contribute to the making of this film but to create an anticipated audience and further build the low budget student filmmaking community.
Filming When Doves Fly (ft. TransPerth)
When Doves Fly, follows Dove, a teenage girl whose naivety takes over when her parents file for divorce. With a plan to catch a bus to an airport and then flee to Melbourne to pursue a future in music, she is only accompanied by her optimistic inner voice. She’s full of dreams and aspirations that don’t match reality. On her journey, she interacts with a series of strangers in different situations. Through these experiences, Dove will reflect on her ambitious dreams and reality.
The film is a passion project by a group of young filmmakers who see it as something more than a university assignment. “Beyond it being an assessment, we are a group of passionate filmmakers who decided to take on this film as it is very relatable and underlies a lot of character to it. It is a combination of a road movie and a coming-of-age drama that you don’t see very often in short films and we felt that we could bring a style to it and more importantly felt that it was a story that should be told.”
Knock Knock – August 13th at Sonar Room
Knock Knock Film will be hosting a fundraiser party featuring acts such as – Wobitah (Rap/Hip-Hop), My First Boy Band (Pop & Hip-hop), Mango Talk (Indie Rock) & Champagne Hami (House).
Knock Knock centres on the character of Warwick Hough, played by the insanely gifted Kingsley Judd. Warwick is a radio DJ who battles with his depression to perform live on air during the world’s premiere apocalyptic event. But Warwick’s demons aren’t the only thing he has to contend with – something is knocking outside and wants to be let in…
In describing their film, the team say that “Knock Knock is a psychological horror that looks at the effect isolation, and self-inflicted pressure can have on one’s mental health while trying to get a dark chuckle from the audience.” So if you would like to watch a local production which will get under your skin, do check out this one!
